Casement
A casement window is a single window unit that usually has a
hinge on either the left, or right, and opens outwards.
Casing
The casing is the surrounding framework of a window.
Caulking
Caulking is a rubbery compound used to fill gaps and exclude moisture,
air, and drafts. It is highly flexible to allow movement without cracking
and comes in a range of colors to match different finishes.
CFM
Cubic feet per minute (CFM) is the amount of air that flows past a given
point to determine the rate of airflow. It is used to determine how effectively
extractor or ventilation systems work or how drafty a building is.
Check Rail
Sash windows have two sashes one above the other. The check rail is where the two
sashes meet. This design forms a weatherproof seal between the two sashes when they are
closed. This seal may deteriorate with age or with the application of many paint
layers and let in draughts or damp.
Clerestory
A clerestory window is any window that is set high up into a raised
wall or roof and is designed to allow daylight into the room below. Originally,
these windows were used in cathedrals; skylights are the modern day equivalent.
